like my problem with the web as master puppeteer of everything is that it creates such a power imbalance in the whole equation to nullify most of the show’s points. annabelle saying that freedom is simply ignorance is an interesting point especially when faced with characters who see knowledge as (amongst other things) a neurotic means to control (the more you know the more you’re in control the freer you are). but the web pulling strings the way it does in the show (through both explicit and subtle control) means that the Mother is so inherently attuned and aware of everyone’s nature that their own behaviour will suit Her schemes not because she influences them but because she picks them from what they are (and She Knows what they are better than they know themselves). how do you combine a Pre-Established scheme funded on omniscience and Free Will? good question. no one has ever been able to give an answer (Dante tried tho)

it’s kinda crazy how like. 90% of the people who interact with jonah as a character completely skip over the sentence I first attempted prevention but the cause seemed hopeless. paying heed to his own words (which are to be held true or the statement wouldn’t have been caught on tape) he did not decide to seek power when he first discovered them (he felt curiosity and fear); nor he did so when his companions became entangled with one of the Entities; NOR when the Rituals became an active threat. he was curious, he studied them, he attempted prevention. discussing privilege around jonah is like kicking a dead horse and I shall never go there but it’s insane to me how his first instinct (or choice, either way) was not to exploit the powers to his gain and to bring the Change into the world itself but to stop it from happening and only inverted his route upon discovering that his crusade was meaningless, that there was no hope for any concrete damage control. this is why I will always, always object to any conception of jonah magnus that doesn’t start with him as a good person. sorry.

ep200 should have been "statement of jonah magnus, on fear. statement ripped from subject, right before his death"

the stark divide between the authorial intent in writing jonah magnus vs what we (10 people and a rolling hay bale) got from it is always astounding. like either collective delusion or some kind of divine enlightenment im not sure which

asexual jonah magnus is so important to me. there are like. 2 fics in the tag but nevertheless

jonah/fanshawe is my favorite niche paring just because it allows me to project a caligula-scipio situationship onto them.

the entity of manipulation would have worked a lot better if it relied on the fear of manipulation without actual manipulation underneath, which feeds a lot more into the paranoia.

i staunchly defend the fact that martin sees jon as his mother 2.0 and by earning his love somehow he can turn around 30+ years of abuse into a romance btw. the chance to care for someone slightly monstrous but not TOO much, difficult and disliked, but that, unlike his mother, will accept his care with gratefulness… I mean understandable. not healthy by any means but understandable
